About WILUS

WILUS is a leading independent R&D lab based in South Korea, with a 12-year track record of developing new technologies related to wireless communications and multimedia. The company is employee-owned, and its team currently consists of 20 engineers and inventors, all holding M.S. or Ph.D. degrees.

Since its formation WILUS has made over 700 technical contributions to leading standards bodies including 3GPP (for LTE and 5G), IEEE 802.11 (for Wi-Fi 6, 7 and beyond) and MPEG (for MPEG-H 3D Audio & Versatile Video Coding).

 

These innovations have generated an intellectual property portfolio which includes more than 3,500 patents across 9 SEP portfolios. Through participation in market-leading patent pools, WILUS has obtained independent validation of its patents’ essentiality to the relevant standards, and secured hundreds of licensees all over the world.  The resulting revenue, along with royalties from various bilateral licensing activities, supports the ongoing participation of WILUS experts in standards development.

 

WILUS also develops and commercializes innovative solutions that help enterprise customers better integrate their products and services with standardized technologies.

 

WILUS is consistently recognized as a success story for Korean innovation in a field that is typically dominated by multinational technology companies and state-funded research institutes and universities. WILUS was named Korea’s most innovative SME by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

  • Recognized as a top patent filing company among SMEs in Korea based on the Korean Intellectual Property Office's 2022 statistics

  • Selected for the Asia IP Elite 2024 by IAM

2023

  • Joined Avanci 5G Patent Pool as a licensor

  • Received a ministerial commendation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for achievements in SEP development (표준특허 창출지원 우수기관 장관상 수상)

  • Acquired certificate of designation as an Advanced Technology Center (ATC+, 우수기업연구소) from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy

  • Filed more than 3,000 worldwide patent applications

2022

  • Launched Wi-Fi 6 Bilateral Licensing Program with Sisvel

  • Joined Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 Patent Pool as a founding member & licensor

  • Began developing the 8th generation of WLAN - IEEE 802.11bn UHR technologies

  • WILUS’ R&D center was designated as the 'Outstanding R&D Center (우수 기업부설연구소)’ by the Ministry of Science and ICT

  • Joined Sisvel 5G Multimode Patent Pool as a founding member & licensor

  • CEO of WILUS, Dr. Kwak, received a ministerial commendation from the Ministry of Science and ICT for his R&D achievements (연구성과 유공자 장관표창 수상)

2021

  • Declared Wi-Fi 6 & VVC SEPs to SDOs

  • Joined VIA Licensing MPEG-H 3D Audio Patent Pool as a founding member & licensor

  • Joined Avanci 4G Patent Pool as a licensor

  • Filed more than 2,000 worldwide patent applications

2020

  • Acquired the Inno-Biz certification from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups

  • Developed Wi-Fi signal-based sensing algorithms and began enhancing core technologies and expanding applications

  • Supported the study of national spectrum regulation for an unlicensed band and contributed to the opening of a new 6GHz unlicensed band in Korea

  • Joined Sisvel’s Mobile Communication Program as a licensor

  • Signed the MOU with HUMAX NETWORKS to develop and jointly commercialize next-generation Wi-Fi commercial solutions

2019

  • Developed user-friendly Wi-Fi Mesh solutions for operators and vendors

  • Declared 5G SEPs for the first time as a SME in Korea

  • Selected as one of the top firms to promote vacation activities for workers and awarded by the Korean Tourism Organization

  • Filed more than 1,000 worldwide patent applications

2018

  • Received a ministerial commendation from the Ministry of Science and ICT for achievements on the ICT R&D project (우수성과 장관상 수상)

  • WILUS’ achievements on R&D project were designated as the ‘Top 100 Achievements of National Research Projects of the Year 2018 (2018년 국가 연구개발 우수성과 100선)’ by the Ministry of Science and ICT

  • Received a ministerial commendation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for outstanding achievements in IP-R&D strategy (IP R&D 최우수기관 장관상 수상)

  • Began developing the 7th generation of WLAN - IEEE 802.11be EHT technologies

  • Began developing unique Wi-Fi solutions based on WILUS’ expertise in Wi-Fi standards

2017

  • Acquired certification of Excellence in Employee Invention Promotion (직무발명보상우수기업인증) from the Korean Intellectual Property Office

  • Received a commendation (청년지식재산인상) from the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property for WILUS’ contributions to the advancement of national intellectual property

  • Received a ministerial commendation from the Ministry of Science and ICT for achievements in ICT R&D and standardization (표준화 유공분야 장관표창 수상)

  • Acquired the ‘NET(New Excellent Technology)’ certification for WILUS’ MPEG-H 3D audio decoder technology from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy

  • Began developing a next-generation video codec standard, VVC

2016

  • Declared ISO/IEC 23008-3 MPEG-H 3D Audio SEPs

  • Began participating in 3GPP 5G NR standardization

2015

  • Joined 3GPP and started participating in 3GPP 4G LTE standardization

  • Joined ATSC and 5G Forum

  • Designated as the Military Service Alternative Enterprise

2014

  • Joined TTA and WILUS' core researchers were designated as the ICT global standardization experts

  • WILUS’ binaural rendering technology was adopted as MPEG-H standard

  • Began developing of the 6th generation WLAN - IEEE 802.11ax HEW technologies
